Miwok 100K Trail Race
Location

Welcome to the Miwok 100K website.

The 16th Miwok 100K was contested in the hills and valleys of Marin County and the Point Reyes National Seashore on May 7, 2011, by many of the top names in ultrarunning competition in North America. A tight lead pack almost 20-strong hammered much of the first half of the race, in search of Montrail Ultracup points, prize money and honor. I think they had some fun, too!

Dave Mackey, 41, took the top spot with 8:03:22 on the clock, saying this was his hardest win ever, pushed by Mike Wolfe, Hal Koerner and Dakota Jones, along with talented Canadian runner Aaron Heidt, local speedster Nathan Yanko, Dan Olmstead and Yassine Diboun down from Oregon, Joel Lanz, and Ian Sharman, who runs a 2:38 Boston in an Elvis suit and set a 12:44:33 record at the Rocky Raccoon 100 last February.

Wolfe was a close second in 8:06, followed by Koerner just 55 seconds later. Twenty-year-old superstar Dakota Jones took fourth in 8:18:01.

Mackey now owns both the open record of 7:53:19, and the master’s record, breaking Brian Purcell’s long-standing 8:42:22.

Pam Smith, 36, won for the women in 9:39:57, after passing early leader Meghan Arbogast, 50, who ran an incredibly strong race to take second place and smash Diana Fitzpatrick’s 50 – 59 age group record of 10:21:21 with her 9:45:35 finish. Krissy Moehl, who bettered her 2010 time on a tougher course, was third in 9:55:56. Amy Sproston and Helen Cospolich rounded out the top five.

There were 350 runners on the course at 5:40 a.m.; 287 were successful in their quest for a finisher’s medal later in the day. Two of our final finishers were part of a team that traveled up from Panama to experience the Miwok 100K. Twenty-five states and five countries were represented at the race.

Although we had sunshine, it was beyond breezy; a strong wind buffeted runners and volunteers all day long throughout the course and surely had an effect on the finishing rate and times. A recap wouldn’t be complete without a chronicle of the injuries sustained but our finish line trauma nurse had nothing more serious than bloodied knees and elbows to clean up. My thanks to all you smart runners who obviously trained well and took care of your needs over the course of 100 kilometers.

There were some substantial course changes due to construction and changes in park regulations. Many runners were happy with the hot showers at the finish line, yet the finish location was a bit bleak and it was too windy to have the campfire and marshmallow roast that I had spent weeks on the trails near my house gathering sticks for…

One of the constants in life is change, and as ultrarunners we strive to deal with and make the best of the unexpected on the trail and at the finish, and, oh yeah, in life. As race director, my goal is to create a venue where every runner can have a supported race on beautiful trails and work toward their individual goals - whether that’s a win against top competition, a personal record, or a first 100K finish - within the context of the ultra community, eat some great food, plus go home with cool swag. (Huge – and I mean HUGE – apologies to people who did not get the right size vest. What was up with the sizing? You could fit a family of four ultrarunners in the Ls and XLs. Next year it’s back to stellar one-size-fits-all items, except for the perennial great Miwok logo tech shirts.)

Speaking of ultra community, the volunteers at the 2011 Miwok were simply incomparable. My thanks go to each of you. The race would not exist without your desire to be out there on race day helping all the runners. I hope you had a fun day! The 2011 Aid Station Captains were Stan Jensen, Ana Braga-Levaggi, the Coastside Running Club, Chuck Wilson, and Fred Liebes. Florencia Gascon-Amyx organized the course-marking crew.
